The Agafay is a stone desert under an hour from Marrakech: a night under that much sky without losing a day of your trip, from $620 for two including private transfers and dinner. The Sahara is roughly eight hours away by road and asks for three nights at least, from $1,850.
What is the Agafay, exactly?
A stone desert, not a sand one: there are no dunes in the Agafay. Mineral hills to every horizon, the Atlas behind them, and around seven in the evening a gold light that drops quickly. It is a setting rather than an expedition — which is precisely what makes it useful when you have a single evening.
What is there to do in the Agafay?
A private dinner under the stars starts at $180, a quad ride at sunset at $150, an overnight in a private camp with dinner and round-trip transfers from Marrakech at $620. The moment you can give it three nights. Below that, you are buying road. Merzouga Express starts at $1,850 over three nights, with a private driver and the Dadès and Todra gorges on the way; Erg Chigaga, remoter, at $2,900 over four days, the last stretch by 4×4 off the tarmac.

- No. It is a stone desert. If you are coming for the great dunes, that means the Sahara — Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, or Erg Chigaga. We would rather say so before you reserve.
- Can you see the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?
- No. Roughly eight hours of road separate Marrakech from the great dunes; a day does not cover it, and we do not arrange it.
- Can you combine both?
- Yes, and it is often the right answer: the Agafay at the start or the end as a pause close to Marrakech, and the Sahara at the heart of the journey when the days allow.
