What is a private night in the Merzouga desert like?
A private night at Merzouga is spent at a camp coordinated at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, reached by road from Marrakech or Fès with a private driver. With Moroccan Wizards, the Merzouga Express route runs three nights and starts at $1,850 for two travellers; Erg Chigaga, remoter, starts at $2,900 over four days.
How long does it take to reach Merzouga?
Long enough that the road becomes part of the journey. That is why Merzouga Express is counted in three nights: the drive is broken, the Dadès and Todra gorges are crossed at the pace of your day and the light, and you do not backtrack the same road twice on the way home. You leave from Marrakech or from Fès, as you prefer.
Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga?
Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is the reachable dune sea: the road runs all the way. Erg Chigaga is the other one, the remoter — late on the second afternoon the tarmac ends and the 4×4 carries on where the road will not, through Aït Benhaddou and down the Draa valley. After dark, the only lights you will see are your own.

What is the night at camp like?
It ends better than it begins. At dawn, from the camp, the sand shifts from grey to rose in the space of a few minutes, and there is nothing on the schedule before breakfast: you watch it from where you slept, or from a low ridge a short walk off, and the only sound is the wind moving the crest above the tents.

- Can you do Merzouga in one night from Marrakech?
- No, and we will say so plainly: the Sahara is roughly eight hours away by road. In a single night you would see the road and little else. If you have one evening, the Agafay is under an hour from Marrakech and starts at $620 for the night, for two.
- What is the best season for the desert?
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer is hot: we shift the rhythm to early mornings and late afternoons. Winter is bright and quiet, with cold nights at camp — we plan for them in the kit and in the dinner hour.
- Is the camp private?
- The night is coordinated privately for your party: transfers, timing, dinner and breakfast. Depending on your dates, we will tell you honestly what can be taken privately and what cannot.
