Riad or luxury hotel in Morocco: which should you choose?

A riad is a courtyard house inside the medina with only a handful of rooms: you gain quiet and character, you give up the lift and car access. A luxury hotel gives space, a real pool and full service, usually outside the walls. Our riad-based journeys start at $1,400 for three days.

What a riad gives, and what it takes away

It gives a courtyard, silence and a human scale: a few rooms, a team that knows you by the second day, a roof above the souks. It takes away the lift — the stairs are often steep and many — and direct car access: the last stretch is walked through the medina, bags carried. We say so beforehand, not afterwards.

When the hotel is the right answer

When you need space, a real pool, a full spa, air conditioning throughout, or a room on one level. That is often the answer for a large family, a long stay in summer, or reduced mobility. A palace room in Marrakech costs well above a riad of character.

How we choose the address

On the journey, not on the star rating. Marrakech Wellness holds to a single address, a riad chosen for the quality of its hammam, its kitchen and its silence — $1,400 for three days. Marrakech en Scène stays at Villa Chocolat, a discreet boutique property in the heart of the city, $3,600 for five days. In both, the address serves the pace of the trip.

Frequently asked

Can you combine the two?
Yes, and it is common: a riad in the medina for the first days, a hotel with a pool for the end of the trip or for the heat of summer. The itinerary is written in that order, not the reverse.
Do riads suit families?
Often yes, taken privately — a handful of rooms will hold a whole family, courtyard included. With very young children the stairs and courtyard pools need real vigilance, and we factor that into the choice.
Is a riad cheaper than a hotel?
Not necessarily. A well-kept riad of character can cost more than a standard hotel room. What you pay for is the scale and the quiet, not the number of facilities.
