A local guide walks you through the medina and its madrasas, then along an artisan route of four crafts: zellige, leather, weaving and copper. How does the morning run, hour by hour?

The guide meets you in central Fès, at your riad or at a point we agree with you. The start hour is written in your confirmation. From there the morning falls into two halves. The first is the medina itself: its lanes, which carry no vehicles, and its madrasas, seen from the courtyard or from inside if you choose to take the tickets, which are not included. The second is the artisan route, four workshops in turn, with a tea stop between the two halves where the walking has earned it. The morning ends back at your riad or at a table for lunch; when we book that table, we set it for 2 pm. The order of the stops moves with the day: a kiln firing or a Friday closure changes the route, not the promise.

Which crafts, and why these four?

Zellige, leather, weaving and copper. These are the four trades the current route already covers, and they are the four you can hear before you see: the chisel on tile, the cutting of hide, the loom's beat, the hammer on copper. Each is a livelihood, not a demonstration. That is the selection rule. A workshop earns its place on this route because the craft is practised there for a living, with a maker at the bench, and not because a visit ends in a showroom with rehearsed patter. We take no commission on anything bought anywhere in Morocco, and no workshop on this route pays us to be on it. That is why none is named on this page: we name a maker only once he has confirmed in writing, and the names you receive are the ones you will meet. If one craft matters more to you than the others, say so in the request: the emphasis, the route and the start hour are arranged around your interests. Ceramics can replace one of the four on request.

What is included, and what is not?

The price, $160, is for two guests and covers the private guide for the half day, the planning, the hosting, the route through the medina and the madrasas, the artisan route, the tea stop and the pickup in central Fès. Not included: monument tickets, meals and anything you choose to buy. A card through a secure payment link adds 5% in bank charges; a bank transfer carries no fee. Who is this for, and who should choose something else?

It suits two people who care how things are made and who have a half day in Fès: the morning before a train, the first morning of a two-night stay, or the one free morning between a Meknès and Volubilis day and the road south. The format is a private guide for two; a third guest is quoted on request. It suits a first visit, because the medina is the largest car-free urban area in the world and, without someone who grew up reading it, it is a maze. It is not built for young children, who do better on the Maker's Trail, where each child makes a piece and carries an artisan passport stamped at every workshop. It is not a shopping morning: if you want to buy a carpet, we tell the guide so, and he takes you where the price is honest, but nothing on this route is chosen for that. And it is not a tour by vehicle: everything is walked, on stone lanes and steps, so sturdy shoes matter more than fine ones.

How do you book, and how do you cancel?

Send the request from this page with your dates, the name of your riad and the craft that matters most. We acknowledge it the same day and send a proposal within 72 hours, with the guide's availability and the start hour. You reserve; once the reservation is paid, the guide's name, the hour and the route reach you in writing. An experience reserved online is confirmed in writing within 24 hours. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before the morning; within 72 hours, the session is charged. A bank transfer carries no fee; a card through a secure payment link adds 5% in bank charges, written in the quote. We advance no funds to a supplier before your payment, and we take no commission on anything we recommend, including anything you buy in a workshop. If Fès is one stop on a longer route, the morning is written into the day by day briefing you receive before you fly, and your driver is on the road 20 minutes before every pickup.

What we refuse

A commission on anything you buy, from anyone. A workshop named on this page before it has confirmed in writing. A visit hurried to fit a shop's timetable rather than yours. A showroom with rehearsed patter dressed as an atelier. And a route sold for Fès that could have been walked anywhere.

Questions about this half-day

Do we have to buy anything in the workshops?

No. Nothing on this route is chosen for what it sells, and we take no commission on anything bought anywhere in Morocco. If you do want to buy, tell the guide: he says what a fair price looks like and leaves the decision to you. Purchases are not included in the $160, and nobody on the route expects one.

Can we bring our children?

The format is a private guide for two guests, and the price is the base for two. With children, Fès has a day built for them: the Maker's Trail, four workshops where each child makes a piece and carries an artisan passport, on quote. For a third guest on this half-day, ask in the request; the price is quoted before anything is paid.

Does it work on a Friday?

Yes, with a check. On a Friday we confirm each workshop's hours the day before and set the route around them. If one of the four crafts cannot be seen that day, you know before you set out, not in the lane, and the guide offers the fifth craft, ceramics, in its place.

What about the heat in summer?

We propose the earliest start the guide offers, and the route keeps to the narrow lanes, which stay in shade for most of the morning. The tea stop is placed where it helps. No hour is fixed on this page: the start is set after your request, and in July and August it is set early.

What should we wear?

Sturdy, closed shoes: the medina is stone lanes and steps, and nothing is flat for long. Comfortable clothes rather than fine ones, since dust, dye and metal filings travel. Shoulders and knees covered is the courtesy that opens doors in the madrasas and the workshops alike.

Can we photograph the makers at work?

Ask first, and the guide asks for you. Most makers say yes to a quiet camera at the bench; a maker who says no is respected, and that is the end of it. Inside the madrasas, photography follows the house rules, which the guide knows.

Can we pay by card?

Yes, through a secure payment link, which adds 5% in bank charges; a bank transfer carries no fee. Nothing is paid before the proposal. Once paid, the guide's name, the hour and the route arrive in writing, and cancellation stays free up to 72 hours before the morning.
