Between Two Seas: Tangier and the Blue Town of Chefchaouen

At eight in the morning, the light on the Strait is still grey-gold and the air carries salt from two directions at once. From a terrace above Tangier you can see where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, a line of changing colour that holds children at the railing longer than you expect. This is the north most agencies skip, and it rewards the families who come for it.

This journey suits families who like contrast and a slower rhythm: a port city of cafes and a sea wall, then a drive up into the Rif to a town painted entirely blue. Chefchaouen is the kind of place a child reads as a stage set, every wall and stair washed the same soft colour, cats on every step, a square where the family can sit while older ones wander a few metres ahead. Distances are real: the drive from Tangier up to Chefchaouen is winding and takes a few hours, so we plan it as a half-day with breaks, not a quick hop.

The blue town is built on a slope; expect cobbles, stairs and steady walking, easy for most children but worth knowing for grandparents or strollers.

Spring and autumn are kindest for the Rif's cool air; summer is warmer and busier, and we adjust the hours accordingly.
